Noosa Residents & Ratepayers Association Inc

The Noosa Shire Residents and Ratepayers Association was formed in 1970.

The Association organised a greatly supported petition against amalgamation by collecting over 18,000 signatures, some 80% of the voting age population.  However, this did not stop the amalgamation, so the Association deemed it necessary to adapt its name to Noosa Residents & Ratepayers Association.  It now liaises effectively with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to achieve the optimum possible outcomes and communication channels for residents and ratepayers of the former Noosa Shire.

Achievements

                                           ASSOCIATION ACHIEVEMENTS POST AMALGAMATION

· Our representatives on the Rating Revision Committee of the former Noosa Shire Council, and now of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, have played a leading role and achieved the following –

* Lesser rates for owner-occupied residents, as compared to investment-rated properties.

* A lesser rate burden on residents as compared with commercially rated properties.

* Achieved a common policy for rate remissions for pensioner residents.

* Obtained a rate rebate for Retirement Village residents in the interim period before the common rating that has yet to be determined.

· Held meetings and a public forum with the Mayor to raise issues of importance to the community.

· Lobbied by mail and face to face meetings with the Minister for Natural Resources and Water for the recommencement of the community advisory committee for the Noosa River Plan

· Demonstrated their commitment to Noosa as an ‘Iconic Place’ through prioritising State Government NRM investment to fund the efforts of community based natural resource management groups ( eg, Landcare, Bushcare and Catchment Management groups)

· Lobbied the Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability by mail and face to face to honour the governments previous commitments to commence Marine Park Planning for the Sunshine Coast in order to protect the threatened marine life of the Noosa Biosphere while improving fish stocks.

· Produced a detailed submission to the SEQ Region advocating revised growth management policy to overcome the drafts documents failure to appropriately acknowledge and respond to the gazetting of the old Noosa Shire as a Biosphere Reserve and a gazetted Iconic Place.

· Lobbied all Councillors to oppose the proposed overdevelopment of Noosa Civic by Stockwell Developments. (No relation to the President)

· Three committee members are active on Noosa Biosphere Boards and we maintain a position on the reconstituted Noosa River Plan Advisory Committee.

· Held a very well attended marine conservation forum which forged an alliance between numerous tourism, recreational and environmental groups from Noosa and the broader coast who are actively pursuing the priorities set by forum participants.

· Initiated the formation of OSCAR (Organisation of Sunshine Coast Associations of Residents), and set up a pre-selection process of candidates for the election of councillors to the newly formed Sunshine Coast Council. The nearly 100% participation of prospective councillors was appreciated by the candidates. The election of preferred candidates resulted in a majority of councillors with philosophies similar to the organisation being elected.
